Bursledon Windmill

Just a few miles from Hamble is Bursledon Windmill, Hampshire's only fully restored and working windmill.

Built on the site of the original windmill constructed in 1766, the present windmill was built by Mrs Phoebe Langtry in 1813-14 at a cost of £800. It milled the wheat produced from the surrounding area into flour for local bakers, ship's biscuits and household use. It also ground barley and oats to produce animal feed.

The windmill was used until the 1880's but after this fell into decay following changes in technology and a prolonged agricultural depression. It was restored to fully working order by the Hampshire Buildings Preservation Trust and Hampshire County Museums between 1878 and 1990, to produce stoneground flour as it did in the 19th century.
