Hamble Piracy! It was at a house in Hamble in 1415 that the Earl of Cambridge, Sir Thomas Grey and Lord Scrope of Masham met to work out the details of their conspiracy to get rid of Henry V and place the Earl of March on the throne. The plot, however, was discovered and the conspirators were beheaded at the Bargate in Southampton. A 16th century castle was built in Hamble, just off the Common. Traces of the foundations can still be seen in the mud at low tide. Piracy and smuggling play their part in Hamble's history. In 1576 a Southampton boatman was hired to take a number of men to their ship in Hamble. On the way they seized a ship and drove the crew overboard with daggers and swords. The boatman escaped and the pirates went ashore at Arundel.
